I really fell on my feet when I found this club. You couldn’t hope to meet a friendly, more helpful group of people.

Within minutes of arriving at my first pool session in January, Ian had not only put me in touch with a whitewater coach, but had also agreed to teach me to do an eskimo roll – an essential move for white water kayaking – and he coached me through all 24 rolls in this training video and many more besides.

So many people have helped me to gain confidence and find my ‘inner idiot’ (I had to dig deep to find this part of myself but it’s definitely needed when learning to kayak), and I couldn’t be more grateful. We have spent hours together out on the water, all of which has been essential in helping me to consolidate the skills I’ve been learning.

WAM has an amazing little club house next to the river Medway in Yalding, so if you have your own boat and kit you can join them on the river most Sunday mornings. They run pool sessions every couple of weeks on a Saturday at Cygnet Leisure Centre in Gravesend, and there is always a gathering afterwards for dinner. The fees are really reasonable, the people are super supportive, you really couldn’t ask for more.
